Hamadryas baboon – hamadryas – Papio hamadryas

It is a baboon from arid regions that meets near the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea Somalia.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Adult males weigh 20 to 30 kg. They wear a coat of long light hair that stops the pelvis. The face is smooth; the snout is long and angular. The jaws show canines of 4 cm. Females are much smaller, they weigh 10 to 15 kg, their hair is brown and short. Hamadryas baboon measuring 50 to 90cm and its measurement tail 40 to 60cm.

Its diet consists of leaves, fruits, roots, seeds, eggs, small vertebrates and even scorpions. Sexual maturity occurs at about 4 or 5 years for females and 5 to 7 years for males. Gestation lasts about 6 months and females have a little about every 22 months. The life span in the wild is estimated at 20.
