Australian wood duck – Chenonetta jubata

Belonging to the Anatidae family, this species can live over 20 years.

Its length is around 50cm for a weight of about 800g. It is the smallest of the geese. The male has chocolate brown head and neck, a short black crest on the neck that stands when the duck is excited. Its chest is grayish mottled brown-black-white. Its belly, back and sides are gray and from its shoulders to tail a brown dorsal line course, abdomen and tail are black and beak and tarsus are gray dark. The female is duller.

We find that goose in much of Australia except on desert land. They love the grassy plains, damp, open forests and ponds. They spend most of the day grazing.

It feeds mainly on vegetation such as grass, clover and others, and it can also consume insects time to others. Young unlike adults, feed on insects and small crustaceans.

The couple is very united and discrete. It is seen most of the time in the Pacific.
